  1. These “suckers” are, technically, adventitious shoots that arise from adventitious buds on the roots. These occur in certain species and often proliferate in response to stress or wounding, as in severe pruning. Or, in your case, when the tree was completely removed. Crape myrtles are notorious for producing these.

"Suckers" refers to the new growth that comes from the base of the trunk. Most people prune these off. However, if you want your Crape Myrtle to have a more "natural" look or would like it to have multiple trunks, leave some of the suckers to grow. Blooms will appear on new growth suckers.

Crape Myrtles naturally send out suckers from their shallow roots. These are essentially clones of the parent plant, and if you don’t remove them, they’ll continue to grow in places where you may not want another tree. Or, they’ll end up being additional trunks for your existing tree.

A: These sprouts growing around the base of the crape myrtle are called suckers. If you leave them they will eventually become large making the tree have more trunks than desired. We would suggest limiting the crape myrtle to no more than five main trunks with three to five being acceptable. This makes the tree much easier to manage.

All crape myrtles sucker. There is nothing you can do to stop it. They are naturally a multi-trunked tree/shrub. Some varieties tend to sucker more profusely than others, but they all do it. Just continue to trim off the suckers at ground level as soon as you see them.
