Monterey is one of California's most attractive coastal cities and was formerly the state capital. Its downtown has more historic structures than any other city west of Santa Fe. Today, it is most renowned for its stunning coastline, and world-class aquarium, and was also made known because of the several John Steinbeck books set there.
