The hoverboard, a self-balancing scooter that has since gained popularity as a mode of personal transportation, was first invented in 2013.

The exact hoverboard’s invention date is unclear, but the first hoverboard design was patented in the early 1990s by Dean Kamen. Whereas, the original design of most types of hoverboards we see today was patented by Shane Chen and was introduced by his company, Hovertrax, in 2013.

The history of hoverboards dates back to the 1980s when the concept of a floating, futuristic skateboard was popularized in movies and television shows. However, it wasn't until 2015 that the first commercially available hoverboards hit the market, using self-balancing technology to allow riders to glide smoothly over various surfaces.

The hoverboard was the brainchild of Shane Chen, a Chinese-American inventor. Chen is a prolific inventor with numerous patents to his name, but he is best known for the hoverboard. He patented the device in 2013 under his company, Inventist, and introduced it at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 2014.
