A pet microchip is about the size of a grain of rice. It consists of a tiny computer chip housed in a special type of glass. The material is compatible with living tissue. The microchip is implanted between the animal's shoulder blades under the skin with a needle and special syringe.

The purpose of microchips used for pets is to provide a form of permanent identification. These microchip implants are called radio frequency identification (RFID) tags.

A microchip is a small implant that is located under your dog’s skin that is an identifying integrated circuit. This chip uses passive radio-frequency identification technology known as a PIT tag.
